Top 10 Classic Wedding Songs

As a wedding musician, nothing really beats the honour of being able to perform songs that are special to couples, particularly those that are chosen to be part of a ceremony or as a first dance. When it comes to choosing a song for your wedding ceremony or first dance, there’s lots to consider! Is there a tune that is ‘special’ to you and your partner? Do you go for a timeless love song or a modern day groove that you connect with?

For many folks, it is hard to go past what we might call “Classic Wedding Songs”. Classic doesn't have to necessarily mean ‘old’ … it’s more about the timeless quality, enduring popularity and emotion they evoke. Here is my list of the 10 best and most popular ‘classic wedding songs’ - in no particular order! - and a mash-up video of my acoustic renditions of these numbers.

1) Can’t Help Falling In love with you - Elvis: a timeless melody, wrapped up in gorgeous and evocative lyrics. is there a more captivating opening line than “Wise men say only fools rush in…”

2) Your Song - Elton John: what more can be said about this beauty… the lyrics, the story, the simple honesty in the words. It remains a wedding staple almost 50 years since it’s release - and not hard to see why.

3) Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden: The first Oz song on the list, a stunning tune thatalways a popular tune for a first dance.

4) When You Say Nothing At All - Ronan Keating: A wedding favourite - and with good reason! Gorgeous melody, delicate guitar and a subtley intimate theme.

5) How Sweet It Is - James Taylor: Mr Taylor penned many tunes smooth and from the heart, none better than this silky (and fun!) ode to love.

6) You’re my best friend - Queen: Taken down to a acoustic arrangement, the beautifully simple lyric comes through in this Queen favourite

7) All I Want Is You - U2: These Irish lads know a thing or two about writing beautiful love songs - perhaps none better than this one. Direct, confessional and lyrically stunning - just superb.

8) Never tear us apart - INXS: Another of the greatest Australian love songs written - what an epic tune that fits the bill for many occasion and sentiments

9) Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder: Stevie!! The uplifting groove in his songs takes us all somewhere else - this one is one if the smoothest and most soulful love tunes ever recorded

10) Every breath you take - The Police: works as an upbeat number or as plucked here, the lyrical imagery in this tune hooks you in every time.
